To fully appreciate all this car has to offer, let’s explore the car’s major features and finer details.
Engine:
Being the first of its kind ever built by KATECH, the billet aluminum short block enables 500 cubic inch displacement which would be impossible with production based alloys. The block made of 6061-T61 aluminum is only the beginning. After hot honing, the bores are coated with nickel-silicone carbide instead of traditional iron liners – a material which is just below the hardness of a diamond. This coating allows for great wear resistance without the weight of iron. The only part of the block which is steel are the billet machined main caps for added strength.
Located at the base of the engine is a Callies forges steel internally balanced crankshaft that produces 4.5 inches of stroke. The attached 24X reluctor wheel allowed us to use the GM MEFI controller. Rotating parts include K1 forged steel H-beam rods measuring 6.365 inches pushing KATECH’s 4032 forged aluminum pistons. This combination delivers a compression ratio of 11:1 yet still runs on pump gas.
The camshaft for this engine is specially ground to promote drivability. The cylinder heads are stock LS7 heads except for upgraded springs and retainers. All of this is topped by a KINSLER cross ram fuel injection system which uses individual runners equipped with their own throttle blades. Each blade opens aat the same rat and in unison. The tubes, made of carbon fiber, help with adjusting where the power band lies. The shorter tubes create high end power while the longer tubes provide more on the bottom end. The engine is mated to a RPM built Tremec T56 6 speed transmission and the rear gear is a Dana 44 converted to a 3.73 ratio.
Esthetically, the engine is as beautiful as it is powerful. Carbon fiber valve covers border the Atomic Orange KINSLER intake. The Atomic Orange water pump housing, bracket and dry sump oil pan set off the specially built polished aluminum MARCH front drive system. Braided stainless steel hoses highlight the engine bay. Other polished features include the DEWITT built radiator as well as the condenser. The dual Spal fans are chrome plated. To offset the shine we used a unique process of Teflon. This coating was applied to plumbing parts, such as the specially built PETERSON oil tank, the WILWOOD master cylinder and the specially built aircraft grade aluminum tubing radiator hoses. For cohesiveness, the hood latches and receivers, as well as the hood hinges, were also Teflon coated. This left a durable, eye catching finish that also provides advanced flow.
Inner Workings:
Stainless steel lines were used throughout. The specially built FUEL SAFE stainless steel fuel tank features original external specifications built around a racing spec bladder. Drawing on the extensive knowledge of owner, Tom Coleman, the exhaust system started with THE WINNING COLLECTION’s hand built stainless headers, which continues into a race inspired 3-inch stainless steel exhaust. The exhaust exits into a classic C6 configuration. Per Tom’s specifications, the car’s exhaust exits at the rear in the center. This was a challenging feat lesser restoration facilities would not have attempted. Many hours of design and redesign were required. To finally accomplish our goal, we used the NASCAR style boom pipe which was redesigned and flattened.
THE WINNING COLLECTION has a minimum standard of wiring on all of our custom builds. It starts with the quality of materials used. Aviation grade, shock and water proof sockets and connectors are used as well as marine grade wire. All wires are numbered on each end and silver soldered at the connection, a process carried over from our racing days at TWC MOTORSPORT. This extra time and attention creates a system that is wired for life.
Body:
To keep all this heart thumping power harnessed to the road, we started with a JAMISON tube frame C4 chassis. We applied upgrades to include gussets and plating to handle the high horsepower. Heim joints were used instead of tie rod ends for superior strength and adjustability. A road racing inspired sway bar was also added to the front. Stock dog bones were replaced with racing trailing arms in the rear. The rear suspension is also adjustable. QA1 coilovers set the stance. Paint was applied to the entire chassis and all suspension parts before assembly.
A real stock Corvette body is the base of this car. The body has undergone major transformations including extensive reinforcement of the fenders and tunnel. Steel reinforcement was also added to the floors under the seats. Countless hours went into creating the opening inlet of the functional stinger hood. In order to let the air in and keep unwanted particles out, proper filtering was a must.
To accommodate the enormous amount of horsepower and torque, the front and rear fenders were widened for larger tires. This design was created by BILL THOMAS, the legendary fiberglass and performance guru who created the “Bill Thomas Cheetah” and the “Cobra Killer” in the 1960′s. Close to 3000 hours went into redesigning the body. The end result was an eye popping additional 6-inches per rear fender and an additional 2-inches per each front fender. The added inches allow for huge MICHELIN Pilot Sport 335/30/18 Z rated tires, mounted on custom built 12-inch HRE 840R wheels in the rear and 275/35/18 Z rated Michelins on a 10-inch wheel base in the front. WILWOOD 6 piston rotors on the front and 4 piston rotors on the back along with 335mm x 32mm 2 piece slotted and cross drilled brake rotors were used to bring the force behind this powerhouse to a stop.
The wheels were originally ordered with a satin black powder coated center featuring a thing Atomic Orange ring around the lip. While this was in keeping with the color scheme of the car, we wanted more punch. Hours were consumed to carefully mask the wheels in order to paint the inserts Atomic Orange. The lip of the wheel was anodized and another ring was painted around the lip.
Our in-house craftsmanship was applied to the Drop Top whose hand built roll bar is structural. It was painted in Atomic Orange to match the predominate color of the car. The front side was then covered in black leather.
Exterior Features:
With an engine that packs such an enormous punch, it was only fitting we use an equally powerful color. Nothing seemed more fitting than Atomic Oraqnge. To make it even more unique, the color was altered to give it a stunning green sheen at certain angles. Midnight Black was selected as the secondary color creating an award winning combination, earning the PPG DREAM CAR AWARD for best use of color at the 2011 GOOD GUYS SOUTHEAST NATIONALS.
In addition to the show stopping color combination, a very unique process was used on the car. Teflon. Every exposed piece of trim, every piece of bright work, except the front and rear bumpers, was Teflon coated. The car has no “bling” except for the shine of the paint. Attention to detail is the name of the game at THE WINNING COLLECTION. The use of Teflon coating not only creates an aesthetically pleasing finish, but it is more durable and impervious to wear and fading.
Interior:
Not just any interior would do for the A-BOMB. A custom built PAUL ATKINS interior makes this cabin one of a kind. Orange and black leather as well as black Alcantera suede-like material sets this late model apart form others of its kind. More than just the color scheme was carried over to the interior. Teflon was also extensively used to coat interior features such as air conditioning registers, gauge bezels, switch guards and door handles. A custom built and hand painted 6 pack of guages highlight the dash. Electric windows and electric vent windows were added for convenience while WILLIANS harnesses and a MOMO wheel add to driver comfort and safety.
Extra Features:
Not to be considered lesser features, the car boasts many other goodies. The original headlights were replaced with Hella H4 lights. Original turn signals were converted to accept PIAA driving lights. LED turn signals were painstakingly added to the front grille. Many hours went into converting the original reverse light to a LED 3rd brake light.
The trunk hoses two specially built Teflon coated boxes. One is for the OPTIMA battery while the other houses a massive ALPINE amp, interface and I-Pad. These boxes are mounted to both sides of the ALPINE sub-woofer. Mid-range speaker with tweeters are mounted in the door panels and speakers are mounted behind the seats. A SECRET AUDIO HEAD provides the much needed space to pack all this equipment in a small space.
To say the A-BOMB is impressive doesn’t begin to do it justice. This car is like no other as was proven by the awards won at the recent GOODGUYS SOUTHEAST NATIONALS in Charlotte, North Carolina. Not only did the A-BOMB receive recognition for its use of color but it received a BUILDERS’ CHOICE AWARD as 1 of the 10 best cars of the show, making it the only car to take home two awards. With approximately 3500 cars participating in the show, the A-BOMB clearly made its presence known in a big way.
This 1967 resto-mod is nothing short of a masterpiece. It is the perfect investment for any collector who wants to own one of the finest, most unique cars available.
